The British Canadian Chamber of Trade and Commerce (BCCTC) held its Annual General Meeting during the summer of 2026, marking an important milestone in the Chamber’s history as it celebrates its 75th anniversary.

Founded on June 1, 1951, originally as the British Canadian Trade Association (BCTA), the BCCTC was established to support and strengthen commercial ties between Canada and the United Kingdom. Today, the Chamber remains an independent, private-sector, non-profit organization governed by an elected Board of Directors and receives no direct funding from either the Canadian or British governments.

Strengthening Canada–UK Business Relations

The BCCTC continues to advance its mission through four key objectives: promoting bilateral trade, commerce and investment; strengthening understanding between British and Canadian business communities; creating opportunities for business and social networking; and representing the interests of British and Canadian businesses on matters relating to trade, commerce, finance and industry.

The Chamber maintains close relationships with the British High Commission, Global Affairs Canada, UK trade and investment departments, chambers of commerce, municipal authorities and trade associations. It also works extensively with organizations including the Toronto Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, European Chambers of Commerce and EUCCAN, British Chambers of Commerce in Latin America and the Caribbean (BritLAC), Club Canadien de Toronto, and OWIT.

A Changing Trade Environment

The AGM highlighted the significant opportunities emerging from the evolving global trade environment. The UK remains Canada’s third-largest export market, while two-way trade in goods and services exceeded $50 billion in the twelve months to June 2025.

The UK’s accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) is creating additional opportunities for Canadian and British companies, including expanded market access, government procurement opportunities, and new commitments in services, investment and temporary business travel. The CPTPP also provides greater flexibility for businesses seeking to diversify supply chains and reduce exposure to global trade disruptions.

The Chamber continues to see growing interest from UK companies seeking to enter the Canadian market and from Canadian businesses exploring opportunities in the UK. It is also actively collaborating with trade and investment missions from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, helping businesses build connections and identify new opportunities.

Looking Ahead

As the BCCTC enters its 75th anniversary year, the Chamber is building on more than seven decades of promoting international business relationships. From its early days providing practical support to travelling businesspeople and publishing Connections, to its current focus on digital engagement, international trade and cross-border business development, the Chamber continues to evolve with the needs of its members.

The AGM also recognized the contribution of the Chamber’s Board and leadership team, whose expertise spans finance, law, taxation, international trade, government affairs, public policy and business development.

The BCCTC looks forward to celebrating 75 years of British–Canadian business connections while continuing to create new opportunities for its members and strengthening the transatlantic relationship for the future. More information below.
