Revolutionary £37.6m UK Digital Twin Centre announced for Belfast!

By Michael Barton, Regional Director Canada, Invest Northern Ireland Americas

Belfast Region City Deal and Innovate UK announced a £37.6m investment in the UK Digital Twin Centre, a centre of excellence that will revolutionise how industries develop products, services and systems across the UK. The £15m of funding from the Belfast Region City Deal will help support core research and the building of skills and capability. This investment will support Northern Ireland's ambition to build innovation and digital capability, increase productivity, support reaching net zero targets and create more and better jobs.

The Belfast Region City Deal (BRCD) launched in December 2021 was a key milestone for the Belfast region, securing the substantial financial commitment from UK government and BRCD partners. The UK Government and NI Executive have each committed £350 million alongside partners who have committed a further £150 million. Plastic Pollution Treaty 🇬🇧🇨🇦

At the end of April, the British High Commission marked the start of the United Nations Environment Programme Plastics Treaty negotiations in Ottawa. UK Environment Minister Rebecca Pow attended the fourth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution. As founding members of the High Ambition Coalition to End Plastic Pollution, the UK and Canada are committed to ending plastic pollution by 2040. These talks were key to making that happen.

Trade update: Are critical minerals getting more critical?

By Christian Sivière, Solimpex, International Trade Consultant and Lecturer.

The UK and Canada have agreed a landmark agreement to co-operate on critical minerals such as cobalt and lithium that are essential to the economy, to bolster vital technologies such as smart phones, solar panels and electric vehicles, and working together on critical minerals research. In these days of trade disruptions and intense global competition, let’s look at critical minerals. Read more here.

What British companies considering an Expansion into Canada need to know about Unions

By Fiona Brown, Partner, Aird & Berlis LLP.

Unionization can be perceived by employers as leading to a significant loss of control over their workplaces and, specifically, a loss of flexibility to manage in the efficient and effective manner to which they are accustomed. It is desirable to operate within a jurisdiction in which organizations are free to manage and negotiate directly with their employees, rather than indirectly through a union that represents the collective interests of those employees. This article provides a high-level overview of some of the considerations an employer may wish to consider in respect of unionization when expanding into Canada.

UK-EU Trade

"Women in Trade"

On April 25th, the BCCTC joined European Union Chamber of Commerce in Canada (EUCCAN) ’s most interesting discussion on the lessons from Europe and Canada in regards to supporting women in international trade, co-hosted by the EU Delegation to Canada and the Embassy of Belgium in Canada. Always exciting to hear Karima-Catherine Goundiam latest international experiences, and her thoughts on women led trade missions and quotas, those “necessary evil” quotas that will ultimately change things.

It was comforting to hear how the UK’s post-Brexit trade policy to uphold gender equality has been used as a model by other countries; and recommendations from the panelists to copy UK’s access to financing programs with women sections.
